Benchmarking with Other Organizations Helps Trust for Public Land Increase Renewal Revenue and Participation
The Trust for Public Land (TPL) launched their direct mail program in 2002. A major benchmark for the success of the program is the donor renewal rate which TPL is able to monitor through their participation in the donorCentrics reporting service. TPL joined the donorCentrics Environmental Consortium to benchmark their trends against peer organizations and to learn successful fundraising tactics being used elsewhere.
Conversations during the annual Environmental Consortium meeting convinced TPL that they could be more aggressive in their renewal efforts. Visible evidence that other organizations in the industry are having success with more aggressive renewal programs helped TPL get extra funding to expand their own efforts. TPL increased the number of appeals in their renewal series from four to nine, plus added previously suppressed donors to the renewal series. The result: TPL was able to increase its renewal revenue by several hundred thousand dollars while renewing a larger percentage of their annual donors.
